Thalassaemia Awareness Walk
An awareness walk was organized by the Punjab Thalassemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute, Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore (FJMU) on 08 May 2024, to commemorate the International Thalassaemia Day 2024 at FJMU, Lahore.
Hon'ble Minister for Health Punjab Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique led the walk, while Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, Vice Chancellor FJMU, Prof. Dr Mahmood Ayaz, Vice Chancellor KEMU, Prof. Kamran Khawaja. Pro-VC FJMU, Prof. Noreen Akmal, Principal, Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore, Dr. Hussain Jafri, Director General, Punjab Thalassemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute, Prof. Bilquis Shabbir, Chairperson Department of Medicine/ Director Quality Enhancement Cell/ Dean Nursing FJMU, Former Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Shireen Khawar, Former Pro-VCs FJMU, Prof. Shireen Khawar & Prof. Shamsa Humayun and a large number of doctors and students participated.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique said that the purpose of celebrating the day was to create awareness among people about Thalassemia. He said that the only viable solution to deal with inherited disease like thalassemia is work on its prevention. He appreciated the comprehensive screening and prevention services provided by the Punjab Thalassemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute in all the 36 districts of Punjab totally free of cost.
