In connection with the National Thalassemia Prevention Day on November 8, a Thalassemia Awareness Seminar, walk, and pre-marriage thalassemia screening camp were organized today, November 14, at Rawalpindi Medical University through the collaboration of the Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Programme (PTGD) and RCAP.
The chief guest of the event was Professor Dr. Muhammad Umar, Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University.
Among other distinguished guests, Dr. Yasmin Ehsan (Director General PTGD) highlighted the causes, effects, and prevention of thalassemia, while Prof. Brigadier Mehreen Ali Khan shed light on the treatment of thalassemia major patients through bone marrow transplant. PTGD CVS Consultant, Assistant Professor Dr. Aqsaa Ikram delivered a comprehensive talk on the importance of the CVS test (a prenatal diagnostic test for thalassemia major).
Participants of the seminar included Principal RMU, Principal Nursing College, students of the medical university and nursing college, as well as doctors from the pediatric and gynecology & obstetrics departments. Thalassemia-affected children and their parents also took part with great interest.
Furthermore, In the closing remarks, Rana Muhammad Saeed, Regional In-Charge PTGD Rawalpindi, provided a detailed briefing on the institution’s free pre-marriage thalassemia screening services and other preventive services being offered in Rawalpindi Division.
More, At the conclusion of the event, a Thalassemia Awareness Walk was held, and the chief guest, along with other distinguished guests, inaugurated the screening camp, where 102 students also underwent their premarital thalassemia screening test.
