The seminar was on the “Prevention of Thalassaemia” and working of Punjab Thalassaemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute (PTGD). Many activities were carried out during the seminar, but following were the major ones;

Prof. Dr. Asma Shoukat (HOD-Department of Haematological Diseases, Thalassaemia & Bone Marrow Transplantation, B.V.H, Bahawalpur) said that the PTGD efforts regarding prevention of Thalassaemia are appreciated. She said, not a single man or department can prevent Thalassaemia, it can be prevented by joint effort. All stakeholders should contribute in this fight with PTGD. Legislation for Pre-marital screening should be compulsory for all couples before marriage. She appreciated Thalassaemia awareness seminar activities and PTGD working.

PTGD is an initiative of Health Department, Government of Punjab. It’s mission is to prevent β-Thalassaemia major in the province of Punjab. The program has been conceived as part of overall preventive strategy of the Govt. in the health sector.
Dr. Yasmeen Ehsan (Director General- Punjab Thalassaemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute (PTGD, Bahawalpur)
The PTGD is working with following objectives:
• To prevent the birth of new β-Thalassaemia major patients born in Punjab
• To reduce the burden on blood transfusion services and blood donors
• To reduce the socio-economic burden on the society and state caused due to Thalassaemia sufferers
• To reduce the burden of very sick patients on the infrastructure and human resource available in hospitals
